The additions of Miller and Mihailovic bolster roster for 2021

2021 isn’t for two weeks still, but for Impact sporting director Olivier Renard, it started a long time ago.

After announcing the arrival of Canadian international Zorhan Bassong for the 2021 season a few weeks ago, the Impact made two more additions to its roster in preparation for the upcoming campaign: defender Kamal Miller, a young Canadian international coming from Orlando City SC through Austin, who picked him in the MLS Expansion Draft, and United States international Djordje Mihailovic, a Chicago Fire midfielder stemming from the club’s Academy acquired for a fee that could rise to $1 million in GAM.

Aged 23 and 22 years old respectively, these signings bolster the sporting director’s vision of having young players play an integral role in the team’s success.

“Kamal is a left-footed defender with a different style than what we already have at this position, while Djordje is a creative and versatile player in the attacking department,” explained Renard. “We are very happy with these acquisitions.”

Although young, both these players join the club with lots of MLS experience. In four seasons with the Fire, Mihailovic played 73 games, scoring seven goals and getting 15 assists. The 22-year-old midfielder also played six games with the American national team, including two games in the 2019 Gold Cup, and scored a goal on January 28, 2019, in a friendly against Panama.

Miller, on his end, spent two seasons in 2019 and 2020 with Orlando City SC, playing 28 games, as well as two MLS playoff games. He also played five games with the Canadian men’s national team, including four starts.

Both additions will report to the club’s training camp at the start of 2021.
